UHIP Health Insurance

International Students are often unsure about their health coverage.

What is the difference between OHIP/UHIP and the GSA Health Plan?

OHIP is the Ontario Health Insurance Plan for Ontario residents which covers general medical care, including doctors appointments and hospitalization.

UHIP is the equivalent insurance but for international students only. The GSA Health Plan is a supplementary plan which provides dental and drug coverage. This is a mandatory health plan and therefore students are not allowed to opt-out unless they have alternative supplementary coverage.

For more information about how to enrol in UHIP please contact York International.

International Students and Work Off Campus

As a result of the efforts of the CFS, the federal government has recently passed legislation that will enable international students to work off of campus. Before students can actually do this, however, Ontario will have to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Federal government, and the York University administration will have to do the same with the provincial government. As a result, the CFS's efforts to speed-up this process have continued. It is expected that both MOU's will be signed shortly (i.e. within the next several months). We'll do everything possible to keep you informed and up-to-date.
