On Monday, 13 February through Thursday, 16 February, there will be a referendum for all York University Graduate Student Association (YUGSA) members (i.e., most graduate students registered through the Faculty of Graduate Studies). The referendum concerns graduate student funding for (and participation in) a graduate student and faculty pub and restaurant in the former graduate student pub space in Ross South.
The YUGSA has been working with its partners from the York University Faculty Association (YUFA), the Green Campus Co-op (GCC) and in collaboration with the York University Administration to get the project off of the ground for the last year. So far, graduate students have made no financial commitment but have been included in conversations as potential stakeholders in the endeavor.
The YUGSA executive team endorses the “Yes” vote side of this referendum.
We believe that the reestablishment of a graduate student social space will result in enhanced community within and between graduate programmes, and increased collaboration and collegiality with faculty. With the completion of the York University subway station close at hand, there has not been a better opportunity in recent memory for such potential improvement to the graduate student experience at York Keele Campus. A “Yes” vote will give graduate students seats on the executive board of the space in order to ensure grad interests and concerns are addressed in the management and day-to-day operations of the pub.
Voting will begin at 10:00 AM on Monday, 13 February and close at 11:59 PM on Thursday, 16 February. Voting will take place on the YUvote platform (yuvote.yorku.ca) as well as at two physical polling stations on Keele campus.
