In January 2019, the Ontario government announced changes to post-secondary education which greatly affects students’ access to OSAP and student services. These changes included:

  • The “Student Choice Initiative”: an attack on students’ unions by making some of our levies subject to an opt-out period

  • Cuts to OSAP grants and loans

  • Cuts to college and university budgets, which will result in larger class sizes, more deferred maintenance and even greater exploitation of workers on campus

In May 2019, the York Federation of Students (YFS) and the Canadian Federation of Students–Ontario (CFS–O) launched a legal challenge against the Student Choice Initiative, requesting that the court quash the initiative. On November 21, 2019, the Divisional Court of Ontario struck down the Student Choice Initiative.

While the Ford government plans to appeal the decision, this is an important precedent for Ontario’s student movement! Thanks to everyone who participated in this campaign.
